Professor Savas graduated from Ankara University (Turkey), School of Medicine in 1986. He was enrolled in the neurosurgical training program as resident at Department of Neurosurgery at Istanbul University, and completed this program in 1992. Afterwards, he made his doctoral (PhD) study in Neuropharmacology and got further training in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at Freiburg University (Germany).
He became Associate Professor in 2000; and Professor of Neurosurgery in 2006 at Ankara University. He worked as “visiting professor” at the Departments of Neurosurgery at Munich University (Germany) in 2006; at the University of Illinois at Chicago (USA) in 2012; at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA; USA) in 2019; and at the University of Virginia (UVA, USA) in 2023.
He has got the research prize of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) in 2002. He worked as member of the EANS Research Committee and member the “Board of Officers” of EANS; representative of Turkey at the World Federation of Neurosurgery (WFNS); and as a member of the “Board of Directors” at the WSSFN (Worl Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery”. He is still the member of “European Board of Neurosurgery” (Examination Committee of EANS and Excecutive Committee Member of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ESSFN).
He is mainly interested in movement disorders surgery (Parkinson’s Disease, tremor, distonia), pain surgery (trigeminal neuralgia, cancer pain, neuropathic pain) and brain tumor surgery beside general neurosurgery.
